Care Inspectorate Wales provides guidance on the new re-registration process

Topics covered: care inspectorate wales, health and social care law, Hope Davis-McCallion

From April 2018 the law will change as part of the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016. The Act introduces a new system of service regulation and inspection, moving away from an ‘establishment’ to a ‘service provider’ based model. In a practical sense this means that some care services will be required to re-register their service with the CIW.

The services that will need to re-register are; care homes, children’s homes, domiciliary care, residential family centres and secure accommodation services. It is worth noting that there is a requirement for care home providers to re-register with CIW by 30 June 2018. For the other types of providers specified the deadline is 31 August 2018. These services will also be required to designate Responsible Individuals (RIs).

CIW will not be able to determine the provider’s application until the law comes into effect in April 2018. Applications can be made via the website https://online.careinspectorate.wales/
