Group of providers call for care workers to be recognised as skilled workers post-Brexit

Topics covered: Ridouts professional advice

A Government commissioned report by the Migration Advisory Committee has suggested that post-Brexit, EU workers should be subject to the same visa rules as other migrants. This would have a big effect on the current position were EU workers have freedom of movement and can travel and work within the European Economic Area (EEA) without visas.

This isn’t welcoming news given the shortage of care staff in the country and the reliance upon oversee workers, especially those coming to work from other EU countries.

The Department of Health recently stated that if EU workers were barred from entering the UK there would be a shortfall of 6,000 doctors, 12,000 nurses and 28,000 care staff within five years.
