Jeremy Hunt appointed Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee

Topics covered: government, health and social care, NHS

Former Conservative leadership candidate and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has been appointed the Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee. This is a cross-party group of MPs and members of the House of Lords who are tasked with investigating issues around health and social care and look into how these have been handled by the Government.

Some will raise an eyebrow that Jeremy Hunt will now be scrutinising the Department of Health and Social Care, his own former department. Jeremy Hunt replaces  Sarah Wollaston who lead the Health Select Committee and had historically been a critic of the Government’s approach to addressing health and social care issues.

The committee will almost certainly have a significant part to play in the review of social care. Jeremy Hunt has the opportunity to drive forward change and after being relieved of his cabinet duties in July of last year. In a series of tweets Mr Hunt informed his followers that he hopes the Committee will provide a strong and independent voice and also acknowledges the urgency of the need to address the challenges facing the social care sector.
