New ‘preferred candidate’ for CQC Chair

Topics covered: Ridouts professional advice

David Prior is likely to become the new chair of the CQC replacing Dame Jo Williams who announced her resignation in September 2012.

The Department of Health announced that Mr Prior had served in “a number of political roles” between 1995 and 2002. He is a former conservative MP for North Norfolk and is currently the chair of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals Trust.

By profession, Mr Prior is also a trained barrister and has previously worked at Lehman Brothers and British Steel.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has asked the Health Select Committee to hold a public pre-appointment hearing to scrutinise Mr Prior’s suitability for the post. The Committee will report its findings to Hunt, who will decide whether or not to sign-off the appointment.

The Department of Health said that Mr Prior had been selected as the preferred candidate following “an open and rigorous recruitment exercise”.
