It has been estimated that Welsh local authorities and health boards will received an estimated £70 million to implement a real living wage uplift. This will bring wages up to £10.90 per hour from June 2023.
The uplift will benefit registered workers in care homes and domiciliary care for both children and adults. It will also benefit personal assistants who provide care and support funded through a direct payment.
The wage is independently calculated by the Resolution Foundation and overseen by the Living Wage Commission.
Julie Morgan, Deputy Minister for Social Services, has stated, “We were proud to be able to provide additional funding in last year’s budget to give social care staff across Wales a much-need pay rise. This further uplift will help to support recruitment and retention.”
This comes at a time when the sector is facing staffing shortages and recruitment issues. Hopefully this influx of funding will help alleviate the pressures on providers so that they can turn more focus to providing high quality care.
