At Ridouts, we have noticed that the latest ‘hot topics’ which CQC inspectors tend to focus on during inspections are as follows:
- Staff recruitment records
Providers are required to ensure that their staff are fit and proper persons. Staff recruitment records should be robust and include; proof of identity, a criminal record certificate where required, references from past employers and a full employment history together with a satisfactory written explanation of any gaps in employment to name a few.
- Fire safety
The CQC often criticise providers for failing to ensure that risks associated with fire safety have been mitigated against. To demonstrate compliance, providers should ensure that they have reviewed their emergency evacuation procedures, have regular fire drills, check the premises to ensure fire doors are closed when not in use and test fire safety devices such as fire alarms, emergency lighting and sprinklers.
- Record keeping
Records continue to be one of the main sources of evidence that the CQC relies on during an inspection when determining if a service is compliant. The CQC expects records to be fit for purpose i.e. complete, legible, indelible, accurate and up to date. It is therefore important that there is a big emphasis on the importance of record keeping in care services.
Failure to comply with the above can lead to regulatory breaches being referenced in inspection reports.
