Calls for the Care Worker Visa to be Abolished

Topics covered: Care home workers, Immigration law, staff recruitment, staff shortage

A new Conservative Group is angry at Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for failing to deliver on promises made in the 2019 Conservative Manifesto to reduce immigration.

Boris Johnson originally made this promise and at the time net immigration was 226,000. According to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, this is now at 606,000. Many are worried about what will happen to the economy if this policy were to take effect.

Currently there are 165,000 vacancies in the care sector – this is without further restrictions placed on the workforce pool. If the Government ceded to the demands from this Group, lead by MP Tom Hunt, then the consequences could be dire.

The chief executive at Methodist Homes, Sam Monaghan, has stated that abolishing this visa would only exacerbate the already immense pressure that the sector is under in respect of staffing and recruitment. According to Mr Monaghan, the better solution would be to look at a workforce strategy as opposed to reducing and potentially eliminating a vital resource.

As of right now, nothing has been confirmed, but the potential impact of this will be monumental for the care sector.
